Today we’ve got a little bit of a pre-shake-it-warm-up-treat for you all. As I alluded to in Tuesdays email, we have an exclusive new mix from Layo ready and waiting for you here on our website. Dinky Interview

We have the fabulous and multi talented Dinky playing for us at our 3rd Birthday on Thursday 5th April. We managed to get five minutes with her to fire some questions at her…

Shake It: How has this year been for far for you?

Dinky: 2012 has been great so far, many good shows, a new studio and now just getting back from a wonderful holiday in South America with my husband.

S: You have had music in your life from an early age, how did you get into electronic music?

D: The early electronic music I herd was trough my older sister and her boyfriend (Dandy Jack) She studied in Germany and was active in the electronic music scene in the 80s. Through them I met so many amazing artists like Ricardo and Atom Heart etc.

S: The last we spoke was when you played for our Heroes and Villains party in April 2010, how much has your sound changed since then?

D: I still keep my style and play songs rather than tracks. I have to love a song so much to be able to play it so Im not usually following trends as a DJ. I am definitely playing more disco since the last two years.

S: Are there any new bits of studio equipment that have changed your current work flow?

D: I have keep pretty much the same work flow over the last two years since I got Pro Tools HD which is amazing… but I’m much more of an instrumentalist than before, so I tend to use real bass, sing, play keys and guitar more than ever now.

S: Whats happening with your have a fourth coming album which you are working on with Matthew Styles?

D: Is me as singer songwriter, so it rather unclubby, Matthew is doing co production and mixing, is been a great process but not necessarily easy. Songwriting and producing songs is a totally different game than club music, much more complex if you ask me.

S: Besides the album what else have you got in store for your fans?

D: Doing the live show and visual aspect for the album… this LP is what I been concentrating most so that’s about it.

S: Which fellow producers are you currently feeling?

D: In dance music Todd Terje has been great, on the other hand, I think Flood and Phil Spector are great examples of more indie and pop producers.

S: Have you thought about doing music for films?

D: Yes I’d absolutely love to, but is either syncing and existing song for a film or creating the music from scratch. On the latter one usually needs to be a trained composer, I’m a trained musician but I believe I would need a little bit of help to create suites and symphonies. Is not as easy as it sounds.

S: How would you describe your sound as a producer as you like to make music thats ticks outside the normal box?

D: Describing my sounds is usually very hard, is like describing my own voice as a singer , I cant hear myself like the others do!.. Is better to leave that to other people , I just try to be as natural as possible with my music.

S: What music do you currently listen to besides house & techno?

D: Lost of Jazz, I’m a big fan of classic jazz and blues, as I also, sing and play this style. So lately is been Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Julie London, Billie Holliday.

S: The music industry as a whole is tough to crack did you ever have a period where you really just wanted to give up?

D: I did actually, but I never wanted to give up music as I consider my self a devoted musician. .A few years ago I thought about stopping DJing and making dance music. On one hand I felt it was not artistic enough for me, I was always limited to this bass kick and to make people dance in a party scenario where not necessarily people where paying much attention to the music. On the other hard, I’m not a heavy party person anymore and felt out of place sometimes… I don’t like to be fake and I felt that there was so much fakeness going on to get gigs and be in the right group, that’s so not me. Now I’m more at peace with that, and with my new project I found a way to be inspired and challenged again through singing and songwriting. Is about finding a balance, I love DJing but I needed something more challenging to keep my interest as a musician.

S: You are playing at the Shake It 3rd Birthday Party. What will you have in store for the ever so faithful following?

D: lots of good vibes and giving as much as I can as a DJ.

S: Is there anything you would like to plug that you have in the pipeline?

D: Our album which will be in Cross Town Rebels at the end of this year .

S: If you were banished to a desert island and had to take three famous people dead or alive, who would you take and why?

D: Very hard question as I don’t wanna be stuck with someone not very nice. I would take my famous friend Jorge Gonzales (chilean pop star) as he is one of the nicest guys around. As I don’t really know personally any other famous people I will go with my instinct – Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.

Oval Space

Oval Space is pretty much virgin territory for everyone involved, as it hasn’t really been used for events like Shake It in the past, so you guys can rest assure that you will be party pioneers on this very special night.

The venue is located on a street called ‘The Oval’ which is smack bang in the Bethnal Green / Cambridge Heath area of East London, next to those four old gasometers on Regents Canal, just off of Hackney Road. The place is super easy to get to via the underground from Bethnal Green tube station, as well as London Fields and Cambridge Heath overground railway stations. Buses which travel along Hackney Road include the 26, 48 and 55, and buses which stop along Cambridge Heath Road include the 254, 106, 388 and the D6. A map can also be found on our website.

The venue itself, being an old warehouse, is tucked away on a small industrial estate. We’ve put together a selection of photographs below, which will give you a good feel for the size of the space, it’s surroundings and what to expect when you rock up on the 5th April. It might look a bit bare and sterile at the moment, but imagine it filled with a thumping sound system, psychedelic lights, a big ol’ bar, several hundred weekend warriors and a handful of top draw DJ talent. We’re absolutely over the moon with excitement at the prospect of partying somewhere new, variety is the spice of life as they say, and coupled with the fact that this will be our third birthday and we’ve got a very special guest in the shape of the amazing Dinky, this could turn out to be the most memorable of Shake It’s to date.

Introducing Dinky

So what about Dinky, our very special guest we’ve booked for the birthday party? Well as you may or may not know, she’s a Chilean born and bred, from the capital Santiago and who’s known to her mum as Alejandra Iglesias. A talented, classically trained multi-instrumentalist, who in the mid 1990′s moved to New York to study contemporary dance. And it was whilst in New York that she found herself fully immersed in the underground dance music scene as a DJ and a clubber. She began to write and produce music in her early twenties and released her first 12″ titled Atacama on Traum in late 2000, with follow ups on Carpark and Sonic Groove over the next couple of years.

2003 saw her relocated to Berlin, and in 2005 she released the huge “Acid In My Fridge” 12″ on Cocoon Records.

Since then we’ve seen her output remain steady and strong, with singles on Horizontal, Crosstown Rebels, Ostgut Ton and LPs on Vakant in 2008 and Wagon Repair in 2009.

Searching Dinky’s Soundcloud page has thrown up a wealth of music, including this awesome soul, disco and house set recorded live at the legendary Panorama Bar in Berlin. We’ve had it blaring out of the speakers all morning and it’s brought a smile to our little faces…

We’re very pleased to announce that this Saturday 18th February Shake It will be taking over Red Gallery at the Old Street end of Rivington Street in Shoreditch. The venue has recently had it’s capacity lowered, and we’re down to our last 20 remaining tickets, so if you still need to get hold of one get yourself over to Ticketweb quickly. We will have space on the door for 100 cash payers only. So if you don’t have a ticket in your hand, and you really want to get in, make sure you arrive nice and early.
